About This Quote

Fear breeds a desire for simplicity. Good and evil. Right and wrong. Chains of command.

This quote is something that can be easily taken out of context. It can make you think you should go against the system, not because you are against the system but because you want it simplified. Most everyone understands that simple systems are better than complicated ones, but most don’t realize that simplicity is good for society as a whole.

It’s easy to see that when things are complicated, things get out of balance. An example would be laws that are too strict or laws that are too loose. An easy to understand example would be laws regarding smoking in public places or laws regarding alcohol consumption in public places.

There was a time when it was considered socially unacceptable for women to smoke in public or have alcohol in public places even though cigarettes and alcohol were legal at the time. Even with this kind of law, it was never enough to stop people from doing things they shouldn’t do in public places, so more laws were passed requiring people to stay away from certain areas when they were smoking or drinking. The end result is that more people are arrested each day for breaking laws against smoking in public places or drinking in public places than when they were left alone.

Most people think this is fair, but many disagree with this idea because everything has become too complicated with all the restrictions on smoking in public places and drinking in public places.
